What a week. Earthquakes, hurricanes, flash flooding—oh my! Tuesday afternoon my house vibrated furiously as I desperately tried to finish cranking out an email. Couldn’t let a little vibration stop me. When I look back on that afternoon I have to kind of pause at the somewhat comical sequence of events that took place in my home as the earth shook under my feet. (Yes, I LOVE Carol King.)
First, DENIAL. I chose to ignore my vibrating home. I HAD to finish that email.
Next: CURIOSITY. What’s going on here? Helicopters landing on the roof? A bomb? Tornado? Earthquake? No, I don’t live in California.
Then, what do you DO when you feel an earthquake? I know. Run downstairs and hide in the bathroom. Be sure to take your phone and call your husband at work because you want to make sure he gets the message. They should look for you in the bathroom when the house comes tumbling down on top of you. Wait a minute, that’s what you do in a tornado. NOT an earthquake, silly.
Is it over yet? Can’t really tell. The house doesn’t appear to be vibrating anymore but I’m a little too wobbly to leave my nice, secure and cozy spot on the bathroom floor. COMPANY, that’s what I need. Out into the street I go, still shaking, still a little wobbly. Feeling like a woos, I’m grateful to speak to my neighbors who are also feeling a little shaky. I’m not a woos after all. Look, even Dennis is a somewhat rattled by this. . . EARTHQUAKE?
Finally, go back into the house and spend the better part of the afternoon communicating on facebook because the phone lines are down and really, all you want is a little company as you pull yourself together and get back to that email.

Sue Ann, you’re right, this was a hoot — and I can SO relate. During our recent earthquakes, my thought process was like watching two different movies at the same time… one part carried on “as usual” while the other part was running around screaming, “The sky if falling!” (Or rather… singing, “I feel the earth move under my feet!”) I like Carole King, too! 🙂
Ironically, I was e-mailing, too, when the second one hit — I finally finished that e-mail, but that accompanying wooziness does a number on your typing, eh? I also felt the same impulse to be near ‘people.’ Glad things have settled down — there and here!
It’s one of those days/times that will leave an indelible mark on my psyche. I’m so glad I have a sense of humor!
